In 2021, ABT Sportsline will celebrate its 125th birthday. To increase the anticipation of the anniversary even more, there is now exactly one ABT RSQ8-R for each of these years. This strictly limited model is the ultimate expansion stage of a vehicle, which with 600 hp (441 kW) and 800 Nm in production trim, has already set a Nordschleife record for SUVs. A short time later, ABT Sportsline upped the ante with a performance upgrade* to deliver 700 hp (515 kW) and 880 Nm right off the bat. Of course, the exclusive special model can even beat this. Here the high-tech control unit ABT Engine Control works in conjunction with a specially designed intercooler, resulting in 740 hp (544 kW) and 920 Nm. The world’s leading tuner for vehicles from Audi and VW offers an optional top speed increase to 315 km/h. Until recently, this tempo range was clearly considered the territory of super sports cars. The rare RSQ8-R also knows how to make its presence felt acoustically. This is guaranteed by the stainless steel ABT exhaust system. With its four 102-mm end pipes, it also makes a visual statement.

However, the ABT RSQ8-R does not only display its special status by means of striking details. The aero package is a rolling flagship for the skills of the design department at ABT Sportsline. It comprises the following individual carbon fibre elements: Front skirt add-ons, front lip with add-on, mirror caps, side skirt add-ons, wheelhouse ventilation, fender extensions, rear skirt add-on and rear spoiler. Alexander Moulton’s rubber cone and trumpet suspension system was quite revolutionary when it appeared on the original Minis. (Although Moulton had designed a rubber cone and hydraulic system during his time at Alvis). The problem with revolutionary inventions is that once they cease production they rapidly become hard to replace.

Thankfully Mini Spares, true to its tradition of producing hard-to-find Mini parts, has produced its own version of the Rear Suspension Trumpet to fit the wider 3.7” cone spring base (earlier versions were 3.2”) and it is available in two lengths.

The 12.28” long version is available as part number 21A1684 and replicates the part Rover fitted to Minis with 12” wheels from 1984 and the Mini Van/Estate and Pickup models.

The longer 12.4” version is available as part number 21A1684S and is intended for the MPi Mini with 13” wheels, although it will also fit Moke and the Cooper S to September 1964 which had 12.48” trumpets as standard.

The trumpet length dictates the rear ride height so if your Mini has been lowered by cutting the trumpet these Mini Spares versions will enable the original height to be restored.

Catalytic converters were fitted to classic Minis from 1990 on and UK owners need to ensure their ‘cats’ are in good working order when the annual MOT test comes around. Even if your Mini is exempt from compulsory testing it’s still good practice to have it tested to check for any faults you may have missed and to ensure that it is environmentally friendly in the light of climate change.

In other territories, notably parts of the EU, testing may be even more stringent than in the UK.

The Mercedes W126 was the second generation of the company’s S-Class models with the saloon made from 1979 to 1991 and the Coupe made from 1981 to 1990.
