BILSTEIN is the main sponsor for the Italian Time Attack series. One of the coolest competitors is surely the Mini R53 from the GPGARAGE tuner, where 450 hp from 1.6 litre engine are tamed with BILSTEIN two-way MDS racing suspension. With the vehicle weighing only 890 kg, the word “mass inertia” seems to come from the big book of fairy tales rather than from real-world physics. But what is Time Attack? Just another circuit race?

Yes and no: Because Time Attack is more like an ultra-gripping qualifying, which has become the main attraction – and rightly so! This type of event was created in the 1980s on the tuning scene of Japan. During timed circuits, it primarily tested the effectiveness of completed conversions and the performance of own vehicles – also as a selling point, if done by a professional tuner. Gradually, the scene grew more and more professional, so that nowadays it is mostly professional motor sports components and pure racing cars competing.

The Time Attack series are now available not only in Japan but also in the US, Germany, Finland and even Italy. Here, BILSTEIN has entered in an important partnership with the dealer N.T.P., which also specially adapts suspension for racing and driving. This company also converted the Mini to a BILSTEIN MDS (Modular Shock Absorber System) for GPGARAGE. In this case, a two-way system is used, where the bump and rebound stages for the shock absorbers can be adjusted separately. Two castors with ten tactile clicks make the setup extremely easy and ensure perfect reproducibility of the settings.

Incidentally, Time Attack has nothing to do with illegal street racing from Hollywood films and the underground scene: it is racing on tight racetracks, and here the Italian league has a lot to offer with its famous courses, such as Imola, Monza or Mugello. In total, there will be six events in 2017. The Mini from GPGARAGE is well equipped in any case. Alongside with tons of horsepower and a bespoke suspension, it also boasts a sequential transmission, central locking rims and carbon bodywork.

The latest BILSTEIN B3 range currently has almost 1,500 applications for steel springs alone, as well as a steadily growing number of air springs. As a result, the range includes high-quality OE replacements with a convincing price/performance ratio for almost all passenger car models available in Germany and other countries – from modern compact cars and SUVs to sports cars, luxury limousines and even classic cars.

BILSTEIN manufactures its B3 products precisely in accordance with the vehicle manufacturers’ technical specifications.

The range of coil springs includes models with pigtail ends as well as force-centre-optimised (KMP) and miniblock designs, with each type being suited to different applications and offering specific benefits. The barrel-like construction of miniblock springs, for example, ensures optimal comfort, especially on uneven terrain. Due to their curved shape, the force-centre-optimised springs are able to compensate for the transverse forces in the McPherson spring strut on the front axle and with their rounded end coils, pigtail springs represent the cylindrical design with the lowest installation height.

A common feature of all models is their perfect production quality – the highly fracture-resistant base material (high-quality chrome-vanadium or chromium-silicon steel) is additionally set several times after the forming process in order to avoid subsequent height loss during use. Another interesting alternative for modern suspension systems are the B3 air springs, which are manufactured in 100% original equipment quality (or even as original equipment) and are available for a constantly growing number of car models. While these have been designed for models in which the shock absorbers are installed separately, the B4 air suspension modules are the perfect “exchange partner” for combined air spring/shock absorber units.

Quality wise, they are true to the original — from the gaskets and air spring bellows through to the metal components.

No matter whether you need a classic coil or a high-tech air spring, BILSTEIN B3 suspension springs are always the best option when the old components are worn out. Since many customers are unable to independently detect minor damage such as spring breakage, rust formation on steel springs or initial leaks in air suspension systems, the workshops should offer regular suspension checks. Brown & Geeson Ltd – the UK distributors of RaceChip – is pleased to announce the arrival of the new RaceChip XLR electronic throttle control which allows the response and sensitivity of the throttle to be controlled precisely.

Although the new XLR features some design changes and visual differences to the original throttle response control, the big difference is inside. The new XLR utilises completely new software that is much more sensitive to the response of the throttle.

The XLR vehicle applications list is the same as the current Response Control application list.

The XLR utilises an all new nerve centre called the ‘Brainbox’ which plugs into the throttle pedal, is mounted in the foot well and is controlled via the wired controller connected to the Brainbox.

An XLR Connect version is also available. This allows users to control the throttle sensitivity via the Bluetooth RaceChip App on their smartphone (the XLR Connect also includes a wired controller).
