Lorinser converts Swiss Army Puch G into a pick-up

Enough standing to attention! Lorinser Classic allows numerous Puch G from the Swiss Army a new start into civilian life. Latest work is a cool pick-up conversion. The company from Germany is located near Stuttgart and one of only 46 car dealerships in Germany allowed to use the quality seal of being a “Mercedes-Classic Partner” and has had a soft spot for the first generation G-Class for some time. This was triggered by a larger batch from the first half of the 1990s that the Swiss Army put up for sale. There, the vehicles served under the name “Puch G” rather than “Mercedes”. After being bought up by Lorinser, a number of the cars were sold in their original condition, while others were turned into cool restomods: After several models with a tarpaulin and a mobile home, it is now the turn of the hotly anticipated pick-up version. The original superstructure was removed and all openings in the car body were sealed off with solid plastic elements and a heated glass rear window. The experienced team fitted the loading platform with robust protective cladding and a weather-proof cover that can be lifted conveniently with gas springs.

No matter from which angle, the cool G certainly does not look like it is almost 30 years old and has driven around the globe five times. But that is no surprise – during the conversion, Lorinser Classic extensively restored the vehicle that was first registered in October 1993. Any remnants of army exercises were blasted off the underbody with dry ice, while the body itself had all its battle scars removed with a new paint job in RAL 7009 (matt green gray). Now the all-terrain vehicle is back in “dress uniform”. For all restoration work, Lorinser was able to fall back on longstanding in-house experience. After all, the group of companies includes the classic car business as well as a major car dealership and a world-renowned tuning company.

The former army vehicle also received a small, but stylish modernization makeover. In addition to LED main headlights with protective grilles, the mechanics also installed a towbar which can handle an impressive 3.5 tons. Wheel spacers and fender flares in combination with 16-inch offroad steel wheels from DOTZ 4×4 give the car a solid stance on the road. This is complemented by all-terrain tires from BFGoodrich. After all, a G-Class is not a boulevard cruiser and certainly not a racer – but definitely a true offroader. In the 230 GE gasoline version with 116 HP (85 kW), the pick-up prefers a more sedate pace and the standard 4-speed automatic transmission is ideal for cruising while comfortably sprawling on the seats with completely new Alcantara trim. That is all the luxury Lorinser wanted to bestow on the new owners – after all, the puristic character of the vehicle had to be retained. The price for the extravagant, unique car: 52,900 euros.

The four cylinder Porsche 912 was produced between 1965 and 1969 as the entry-level model and became one of the most famous and successful sports cars of all time. The Targa version (Porsche’s patented variation of a cabriolet) ran from December 1966 (Series A) and was upgraded to a hard window Targa in 1968 (Series B). Whilst it may have been entry level it is still an exciting and desirable car today. GAZ now offer GT fully adjustable rear dampers for both versions to help bring its handling up to date.
